MONICA SHELTON
In the sanctuary of my studio I interpret what I value, feel and see. External experience combined with inner reflection, inspires my art. My concepts and symbols are playful and enigmatic, offering the viewer ongoing freedom, happiness and surprise.
From my extensive travels in the “Studio of the World”, throughout Asia, Europe, North America, South America, North Africa and the Middle East, I became aware of the deep and powerful impact of the language of art. Some ideas take years to show their essence in paint, that is why my sketchbooks are visual diaries and insights of great importance in my creative process and courage to create. From inspiration a painting is born!
I have lived and worked as a visual artist for over thirty-five years. Born in Chile in 1949, immigrated to Canada when I was 18. After many years as an Ontario based artist, I now work out of my Gallery|Studio|Home in West Vancouver, B.C.
Exhibiting regularly in Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, my paintings are represented in private and corporate collections in Canada and around the world. Bringing art and people together is essential in the feeling and knowing of human wholeness.

ARTIST STATEMENT
“When I paint, I want to be alone with the canvas. Only in solitude do I find the strength to get out of my own way and paint unbridled.
The act of painting gives me the opportunity to explore a less tangible reality. My objective is to paint feelings and ideas that are often elusive in today’s world.
I paint from inspiration, using my imagination, dreams, sorrows and joys. I work with a format that is contemporary, gestural and personal. My aim is to help people discover their own story /meaning in the painting and travel to wherever it may lead.
My imagery is grounded in the natural world and aims to expand feelings and thoughts beyond the finite, thereby experiencing new insights into the nature of reality."

ARTIST STATEMENT
"My paintings continue as poetic maps and signposts of the human journey. Beginning with an energetic and spontaneous textural ground, energy lines or marks appear and fade, enliven and delineate. Symbols, metaphor, abstracted realism follow – embodying, balancing and celebrating the pre-cerebral and the intellectual in a very material manner. Veins of subject matter in the natural world are mined and a series of work in acrylic on canvas is explored.
Each ‘Individual Tree’ exhibits a particular quality, presence, and energy. Every ‘Open Vessel’ portrays an essence and potential. ‘Sacred Geometry’ reveals an elemental mystery and more. ‘Light on Water’ affirms even as it embraces the ephemeral. The shape, colour and vibration of light intrigue me.
Born in Toronto, my artistic foundation is rooted in Ontario. World travels initiate and nourish my life of art for over thirty-five years. The ancient and the contemporary both speak to me. As I work with rocks, trees and earth the natural beauty that surrounds my Studio|Gallery|Home and garden in West Vancouver B.C, touches me. Constantly I sense and see a silent language before thought – a mystical unifying inner reality of simplicity and oneness, light and dark, …beauty." |
